Reaching for the stars starts on the ground with a healthy mindset.

Every great story begins with a dream. As the protagonist of your story, the flame inside you burns, but how can you make it grow or even last?
As a coach and a licensed therapist, I have worked with many clients in the achievement of personal goals. A fundamental and critical place to start is in addressing the importance of a healthy mindset. A healthy mindset will make or break your dream before you have even had the opportunity to test it, so it’s important to figure out how to practice the skills associated with it. A healthy mindset requires awareness, strategy and evaluation, resulting in consistent progress and eventual success.
First, let’s explore the importance of awareness. Taking action requires awareness of everything needed to accomplish your dream, starting primarily with yourself. The most critical part of developing awareness is recognition of how you can both be the catalyst for change or stagnation. Any goal first requires that you are present, engaged and ready for change. In this process, awareness of yourself implies looking into your beliefs about yourself, others and the world around you. Growth beyond previous outcomes and thoughts about yourself will require work and consistency because old patterns will try to emerge.
Next, strategy. Strategy involves anticipation of potential barriers and how to overcome them. Again, primarily focusing on yourself, you will establish what you will do under different circumstances and situations with the sole purpose of keeping yourself on track. The rest of the world is highly unpredictable, but we are a known factor. We often have insight into the things we do well, where we struggle and times we have fallen or risen to the occasion in the past. Embarking in a new goal will be challenging and daily outcomes can vary, but establishing a healthy mindset will come as a result of your consistency and anticipation of the steps you will need to take as you move forward. Keep in mind that the path forward will not be a straight shot as unknown obstacles emerge along with old, unhelpful patterns.
Lastly, evaluation of your preparedness, your strategy and your intermittent outcomes will help you adapt to your process. No goal is accomplished in one sitting and we can never anticipate every challenge. That’s okay. What matters most is how we respond to the new challenges we face moving forward. The work you do strategizing will benefit you when this happens because you have thought ahead about what to do in certain scenarios. When Plan A did not work, then retrace your steps and figure out Plan B. This will require some flexibility, patience, and acceptance, as short-term difficulty is natural and expected. As you grow, the process will evolve, but you will reassess continually. As you achieve new heights, the horizon will change and you will rely upon a healthy mindset again.
As your dream or vision begins to take greater shape through the steps you have taken to ensure your progress, a healthy mindset will give you an honest accounting of where you want to go, how you plan on getting there and what to do when you find yourself getting stuck or needing to reroute. A healthy mindset can be broken down into simple strategies that you have likely used in the past, as well as new ones you can learn to apply today for a specific purpose. Building upon your existing strengths, resources and success in life will help you grow in new ways and achieve continued success and fulfillment. With a healthy mindset, the prospect of achieving your dreams becomes more attainable.
So what have you done to achieve a healthy mindset? What are skills, resources and interventions you find most important in helping yourself grow? What are some strengths you would like to build?
